Case study#3 - The Scramble for Africa

Life expectancy of Africa - Gapminder.org

Compared to the countries shown above (Especially, orange continent), the life expectancy of Africa is still too low. What does that mean? That means, there is still lacking in health care. That also shows lacking in technology. Civilization? ---- Not at that time.

It was obviously true that European Imperialism affected Africa in many ways. Some countries needed power and strategic advantage over their European powers. For having land along the Niger River in order to control trades and so on. Many countries in Europe keep an eye on natural resources such as gold, diamonds, minerals, rubber of Africa. Some people from Europe converted Natives into Christians. Some countries needed land for their citizens to live on.

Even though many countries which colonize Africa didnot mean to help the Africans, they brought improvements in Africa. They improved their life which was actually for the colonizers in Africa. That had shown in various ways. For example, in order to help move their people and products, transportation was improved by building roads and railroads. Also, for the colonizers, healthcare improved in terms of hospitals and doctors(including housing). Education was improved by building a school. They taught many Africans specialized skills that helped to improve factories and the production of goods. Not enough Africans were educated, they were not taught how to rule their own territories. In my opinion, their help for improvement their life and their education became important factors to gain their independence in the mid 1900s. European colonialism caused the control. They applied their own regulations to their colonization. And the Africans who regarded higher than themselves control by applying more strict regulations.By the discriminational treatment loosen the modernization of Africa. Because they also gave vested rights for some people. That means to say, they made the same ethnic groups govern their country. That had been loosen the modernization. And still, the class consciousness are still existed, somehow. Even though they independenced, the scramble for Africa is still going on today in some ways. First of all, children who have mixed blood can be the example. Some countries expanded their power by that. Secondly, an unfair bargain of diamond like the movie Blood Diamond can still be existed in some unknown place. Above all things, British driver's seat is left. They brought changes to some countries in Africa which driver's seat was left. And still, Kenya and some south Africa countries use their driving seat on left side.
Even though the dominance was everywhere, they tried to release their continent from oppression by outside powers and direct their own path. They raised some civil wars for insisting their human rights. (ex) Nelson Mandela) They also staged a coup. The first try of Nigeria which is the major country in Africa was Oct,1,1960. On the other ways, there are still some people who become pirate for relinquishing their rights and nationalities.
I think control is needed for blocking people be pirates. For preventing/avoiding current problems of poverty and war in Africa, dispatching armies or sending armies abroad would be helpful for them to be more self-reliant. Even though many groups such as NGO, Oxfarm,UN help Africa, we still need to departmentalize their companies for better help. They are helping by designing a new advertising campaigns for international aid through Internet, TV. They are trying to help Africans to take well-known technology as well. Basically, the greed which the Europeans were to take brought about the division of African territory.

I do hope that an developed civilization can come to Africa as soon as possible.

1. a) Which main topic does the artifact relate to? In what ways?
The dominance by Europeans is highly related to the globalization through Imperialism. Europeans were trying to get African whole continent. They drew maps by themselves. Even though Imperialism was not the reasonable way to be global, it is quite true that it was the opportunity for global citizens to meet in the Africa.
b) Which other main topics does it also relate to?
The thing that Africans tried to raise the revolution is related to the nationalism and liberalism : creation of the nation-state. They tried to protect their country with identity. Their efforts can be drawn in nationalism.
2. Why did you choose this artifact, and how much time did you spend creating and or processing it?
The Scramble For Africa This artifact is the best artifact I have done. Different from the other artifacts, I enjoyed a lot. Since I watched the movie Blood Diamond, I was highly impressed about the continent Africa. And I thought I wish i had an opportunity to learn the Africa. And The Scramble For Africa was that! While I was thinking about the questions on prezi, it was too much fun to me. (Lilly) I can't remember how much time I spent for this artifact. I did not want to count blissful time : )
3.What insights and understanding have you gained from the creation and/or processing of this artifact?
This artifact gave me more information for Africa. On some senses, civilization might be felt too far to the nations in Africa. There are still some discriminated nations who can't even dream for the freedom. It motivates me to think about how my life is satisfying compared to them. This artifact means too much to me. I wish I can help them as a professional helper even in the future.
4.Does this artifact reflect your best work and/or ideas? Why, or why not?
I think I did my best for expressing what I think about the Scramble for Africa. And the Gapminder shows the reality in 21th century as well.
