Case study #2 American Dream - Artifact 4 (Gapminder Analysis)

*Chinese-american contribution to the transcontinental railroad*

Artifact 2 (Transcontinental railroad)

As i mentioned on the Artifact 2 about transcontinental railroad of America, the transcontinental railroad couldn't be possibly completed without the hard working of workers from the other countries with the American Dream.
Especially, the Chinese's hard work with the discrimination with the workers of America has been focused with the transcontinental railroad. The Union Pacific country made the railroad around east part. From Council Bluffs, crossing Missouri river,Nebraska,Colorado,Wyoming,Uta, they reached to Promontory Summit,Utah. The major workers of Union Pacific were retired veterans, the migrants of island. The other Central Pacific departed from West part, they penetrated Sierra Nevada mountain, crossed Nevada,Utah. Also, they reached Promontory Summit. The major workers of Central Pacific were Chinese. Different as East part, the population was not that much. That is why they rely on the Chinese workers. Their start confronted the Sierra Nevada mountains. The climate of mountains delayed the plans. They used the ammumition called Nitroglycerine for penetrating tunnel. That increased the death of workers.

Through this Gapminder, i wanted to include and check the change of population.
First of all, because of the American Dream, the population changed. At first, the graph gradually increased. The upper graph represents china. I set population growth, population, time. These could be too general however that can contain everything. The change of the population of Chinese means that they move to America for their job which was extremely dangerous and poor treated.
The America's population is gradually increased. However, the population growth gets down on the line of China. The time that started to go down is same as the period that they Lincoln signed the treaty of Transcontinental railroad, which was July,1st,1862. Chinese workers left their country with the hollow dream.
Generally, this Gapminder can contain historical facts which was hidden by the veil. By setting the China and America, the change can be founded clearly. This change also can tell that the basic background had been contained.

 - ★Reflection★ -
1. a) Which main topic does the artifact relate to? In what ways?
This change of the Gapminder shows the immigration or emigration. In that sense, that is also related to Human movement and migration. Chinese came to America with the hollow American Dream. That could be one of the best examples of American Dream. What they did was working as much as they can with discrimination. Their pay was too low to them. The reason why they went to America is that they need money for their families who only relied on the worker. When lots of people immigranted to America for working, the America government made the Chinese Exclusion Act to block legal immigrants. Even though the Chinese tried to complete as soon as possible by the natural disposition of America, American government did not prefer them.

b) Which other main topics does it also relate to?
Definitely, this is related to transportation revolution. For the modernization of any countries, the railroad was the important role.  The historical significance of this transcontinental railroad is really great for becoming chance to connect the East America and West America.
2. Why did you choose this artifact, and how much time did you spend creating and or processing it?

I am really interested in this transcontinental railroad. Even though that is true that i didn't even know the meaning of the transcontinental railroad or Civil war which everyone knows, I tried hard for learning, considering in the other aspects. I didn't even imagine that Chinese are related to this railroad. I think the reason i chose this artifact is that i am interested in this railroad which can be classfied as the great American's history. I didn't spend that much time to create this artifact. Because i already searched too much informations when i created artifact #2. I did research a bit more. Kindly, the Gapminder website created the graph for me. The only thing i did was clicking : l
3.What insights and understanding have you gained from the creation and/or processing of this artifact?

I focused on the change of population for understanding how much effort did they put for America with American Dream. Actially, i wanted to criticize how mean the Americans are. Of course, i can not just conclude that the Chinese contributed everything for the transcontinental railroad. However, what i found while i was searching the information was that all of the websites are on the tone of that without the workers from China, the transcontinental railroad can not be completed in a short space of time. And, major workers were from China. Generally, they came there for working for America which was not even their country. In present, no one wants to leave their country unless the War or fatal contagion are there. And, everyone has the nationality. Unless someone can get too much money or progress, we would not go the country for working for the other country.
4.Does this artifact reflect your best work and/or ideas? Why, or why not?

I did find the information, however, it does not actually contain my best work. Kind Gapminder helped me to draw the graph for me. The only thing i did is analyzing.
5.Rate this artifact on a scale of -5 to 5(0 is neutral) for the following 4 criterion:
a) Impact on the quality of your Portfolio 3
b)Impact on your level of happiness/enjoyment 5 - To me, it was great opportunity to know about the circumstances of that time. The graph can gratify my curiosity clearly
c)Impact on your learning 2 - I already knew the basical information while i was organizing the Artifact 2. So, I don't think i learned that much through this artifact.
This artifact is just supportive for my knowledge about the transcontinental railroad.
d)Level of creativity and originality  0
6.Any additional commencts.
~ Thank you for reading.
