Case study #3 - Nationalism

Nationalism

According to dictionary.com, means one’s devotion and loyalty to one’s own country, or national spirit or aspirations. I think that nationalism represents a nation’s own unique voice, including culture, geography and governments. That nationalism attaches great importance to the independence of a country and an union. That was the basic principle of the formation of the modern country.


Nationalism had been supportive for a certain country to find their identity. In the cases of most of countries, they had an ideantity crisis. That had been existed in many ways including revolution. And, nationalism is still alive in many ways.

First of all, Have you ever heard the Dokdo? (What is Dokdo? - English version)

Dokdo is the easternmost end of Korea's territories and is located 87.4km to the southeast of Ulleungdo of korea and 157.5km to the northwest of Oki island of Japan. Even though every koreans had claimed that Dokdo is the region of Korea, that had been caused territorial dispute. Dokdo became embroiled in a territorial dispute. Territorial dispute is the main form of nationalism.

Secondly, racial discrimination is still a problem that is happening in somewhere with various ways. Especially, some states in USA, Australia, Russia, the Republic of South Africa and so on. Especially, in the Republic of South Africa, there was Apartheid. Not only that, but it is still common that there are some racial problems in American school or international school for Asians, African-Americans.

On this sense, Nationalism was the form that can look down on the other countries. I do think that Nationalism became negative. However, there are still some countries that regard finding thier own voices as an essential duty which they regarded before. And, the North-Korea is the representative case. They keep their nationalism. In my opinion, they try to learn B instead A. Present world is not the world that the own country can bring any progress up by itself.

Reflection

1. a) Which main topic does the artifact relate to? In what ways?

This artifact is basically about the naitonalism and my opinion. So, this artifact is related to the naitonalism and liberalism : creation of the nation-state.  With the share of ideas in the class about the nationalism, I made this artifact based on my opinion.

b) Which other main topics does it also relate to?

I think that this artifact is also shows about the Building the modern economy. There are still some countries which nations can not be offered the rights of human. For those countries which nations have limited freedom, nationalism is highly needed for their humane life. However, the world is getting global and universal. People live together on Earth. On that sense, nationalism can be selfish for a certain country. It is still essential for some countries, though.

2. Why did you choose this artifact, and how much time did you spend creating and or processing it?

When I first thought about the nationalism, I thought it is really beneficial for their own countries, including the tradition, their voices. That is what I pondered in the class with my group mates. When I considered about the nationalism again, I thought it can be both progressive and conservative by the global world. While I was considering about the Nationalism whether it is positive or negative, I got interested that I was a babe in the woods! That is why I chose this artifact. I did not count the time how much I spent for this artifact, since I had much fun.

3.What insights and understanding have you gained from the creation and/or processing of this artifact?

The tendencies that some countries still are willing to have the other territories and discriminate can be examples showing to keep nationalism as I mentioned.

4.Does this artifact reflect your best work and/or ideas? Why, or why not?

Since I considered more than three times about the nationalism, I think I reflected my thinking well. I am kind of confused how to reflecct my best work about this nationalism. Anyway, I think I reflected as much as possible.
